PitchWars 2017

Hello You!

I'm Amy, and if you want to get a sense of what I'm like as a reader, I would highly recommend laughing (and crying a little bit) while reading some of my absolute favorite books:

Some of my favorite MG books include:

The Secret Life of Adrian Mole, Age 13 3/4

Dara Palmer's Major Drama

The Bolds

Bad Magic

The Seven Wonders of Sassafras Springs

But my absolute favorite MG book of all time is...

When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead

Some of my favorite YA books include:

Am I Normal Yet?

Code Name Verity

A Monster Calls

Anything written or illustrated by the following will be an automatic pre-order:

Any of the Flavia de Luce mysteries by Alan Bradley. I've read them all!

Illustrator David Roberts

Writer Tom Easton

Some of my favorite adult reads are:

Old Filth

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

Confessions of a Shopaholic

The God of Small Things

A Window Opens

Why do I like these oldies & newbies? I dig a quirky sense of humor, dry wit, lean prose, interesting phrases like "What am I like?" and stories of a life.  These books are my inspirations.

Born and raised in Massachusetts, I've lived in Seattle and Los Angeles, and have now settled down a mere eight miles from our Nation's Capital with my "he's-actually-from-here" husband. Luckily, I have two tween children, so I can more easily frequent the children's section of a bookstore or public library without getting the hairy eyeball.

While I'm not typing away working on my own MG fiction, I'm also an elementary school librarian (PreK-5), where the most favorite part of my job is matching the right student with right book, from Laurie Keller's Arnie the Doughnut to Cece Bell's El Deafo.

As you might expect, my #PitchWars entry is middle-grade humor, and involves, come to think of it, a contest a bit similar to #PitchWars.

My Life as A Writer

Sometimes when I'm writing and all adrift, I have to admit I feel a bit like this:

But then, when I toss all that aside and I stop checking twitter (oh, you can find me more often at twitter.com/amybhahaha), I feel positively like this:

Although I love Titus, over the next two months I'd like to be a little more Kermit. More importantly, I've made some of the best writerly friends I've never met on Twitter and I can't wait to meet new ones this year through Pitch Wars.

Thanks for stopping by and good luck to all my other PitchWarriors!
